No Privacy in America :: George Orwell 1984 Technology Essays
No Privacy in America Feeling the need to be ââ¬Å"at the cutting edge of the newâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the first on your block to have itâ⬠puts us in a race with ourselves to keep pace with the evolving technological world. Cell phones, e-mail, GPS, EZ-Pass, and the entire World Wide Web ââ¬â all these inventions enable us to live in a world where people across the planet are only milliseconds away. All these new inventions, however, also have a drawback in common ââ¬â they serve as locating devices for each and every one of us. Privacy has vanished. In George Orwellââ¬â¢s novel, 1984, Big Brother was a character of fiction. He was able to oversee everything and virtually controlled the daily lives of millions of people. Now, as we advance technologically, the thought of Big Brother watching over us isnââ¬â¢t so far-fetched. He could be the government monitoring the actions of you and your family, or he could be your boss at work secretly watching you when you think youââ¬â¢re alone. Or he could even be those closest to you, tracking your every move. Big Brother no longer has to work hard to monitor us, for weââ¬â¢re inadvertently providing his eyes and ears. Thereââ¬â¢s no question that cell phones are great inventions. I have one and take it with me everywhere I go. ââ¬Å"Never leave home without it,â⬠I tell myself. My cell phone allows me to stay in contact with everyone, all the time. I can call home when Iââ¬â¢m out to let my parents know where I am, or I can call my friends to see where weââ¬â¢re going to hang out that night. I even have the New York Yankees scores text-messaged to my cell phone every three innings so I never miss a beat. The benefits of having cell phones are obvious, yet the drawbacks are something to ponder. In this new age of cell phones the concept of ââ¬Å"getting away from it allâ⬠has virtually disappeared. When I was visiting a college in April of my senior year in high school, my cell phone rang at least twice each day with people from back home in New Jersey trying to contact me. Sometimes it was my friends calling just to see if I wanted to hang out that night, forgetting that I was 250 miles away.

Teens and Premarital Sex :: Sexual Education Pregnancy Marriage
The Impure Waterwheel Have you ever seen a watermill? Turning continuously, they are bound in an eternal cycle. Continually spinning,, the lack of purity in the United States can be compared to that watermill, a never-ending cycle that threatens to spin out of control. We must intercede. Sex out of wedlock creates dysfunctional families, and teens searching for ââ¬Å"moreâ⬠in life, who often turn to the reason they're feeling so glum, sex. Having sex out of wedlock is a big problem in the United States that needs to stop. Strained by relationships on the verge of collapse and peer pressure, many teens turn to sex as an escape. Hardly sixteen, Jamie Lynn Spears is an excellent example of how family problems can pressure someone to do things they know they shouldnââ¬â¢t. Jamie Lynnââ¬â¢s sister, Brittany Spears, is undergoing extensive criticism from the media about her recent mental breakdown, this pressure from the paparazzi has taken its toll on Jamie Lynnââ¬â¢s life and she made a bad choice, as so many young people today do. With the baby, that so often follows sex out of wedlock many times a ââ¬Å"familyâ⬠is quickly formed out of girlfriends and boyfriends who think theyââ¬â¢re ââ¬Å"in loveâ⬠. In many cases, one of the parents will leave, forming yet another dysfunctional family. Dysfunctional families are often unloving and make childhood difficult. Wrestling with their own problems many single parents will simply hang their children out to dry. Basically neglected, children deem themselves extremely reviled and not good enough. Off this assumption of worthlessness, many young people will label or allow themselves to be labeled as ââ¬Å"unlovedâ⬠. Hated by their parents, or at least feeling theyââ¬â¢re hated, teens will go to extensive lengths to find self-worth. While they realize they will never be able to replace their parentââ¬â¢s love, adolescents will always try to find meaning. Teens will search for something ââ¬Å"moreâ⬠in life, which they never got in their childhood always. If they feel they canââ¬â¢t earn their parent's love young people will turn to other things to satisfy their need to be accepted. Grossly, many teens turn to drugs or alcohol to try to forget their life. Tortured by life, some people turn to popularity to appease their soul, but none of these alternatives can. Craving love, many teens turn to sex as an alternative to facing reality, or simply as a place to find the love theyââ¬â¢ve never felt.

Frankenstein Socratic Seminar Reflection
Frankenstein and Pride & Prejudice Socratic Seminar Reflection This Socratic Seminar made me agree much more with Socratesââ¬â¢ beliefs: that extended discussion and continual questioning facilitate the most meaningful learning experiences. It helped me understand the novel much more than I had before because I got to hear about the book from the perspective of others and how they interpreted the story and discussed what they thought were the positive and negative aspects of Frankenstein.I discovered that many others interpreted some meanings of the novel in the same way that I did. Overall, the seminar went very well in both groups, but there were some negative aspects in both seminars. In the Pride & Prejudice seminar, none of the members proposed any questions in response to an already given question (a rebuttal question). This was not the case in the Frankenstein group, which is good. However, although we did ask rebuttal questions, our group failed to use quotes for support an d our discussion was more of a modern conversation between people with a lot of agreeing and disagreeing, but no evidence for backup. I believe that there was only one person who used quotations and cited them to backup his/her point, who was Matt Kane (I hope you didnââ¬â¢t want us to specify names; at least itââ¬â¢s not a bad comment). The Pride and Prejudice group did fulfill the use of quotations, which evened out the differences between the seminars. There were also many great points brought up in our discussion of Frankenstein, which almost everybody agreed with such as how we appointed Victor Frankenstein as the monster of the novel and not the physical monster that he has created. I would not have thought about many of the things with deeper meanings that were discussed in the seminar by myself. Not only was the seminar itself what helped me to further understand the story, but also the pre-seminar tasks (question responses and formation). Each question coincidentally as ked me something that I had thought about at least one time during the reading, and the required quotations helped remind me of when and where I had encountered the question while reading it. The post-seminar paper (this thing) is helping me because it makes me remember what we talked about during the seminar and how it was effective to understanding the story. Being reminded of how effective the seminar actually was, will make me believe more in the beliefs of Socrates, as well as want to do more seminars for different novels in the future.

Advertising works Essay
For this assignment we are dealing with a type of media study, which involves the features of advertising. For this assignment, we have to write a detailed and comparative review comparing the two adverts for a student studying how advertising works. We have been given a copy of an advert, which is trying to sell Kelloggââ¬â¢s Special ââ¬Ëkââ¬â¢. The assignment states that we must discuss the similarities and differences between the Kelloggââ¬â¢s advert and an advert of our own. During the lesson we discussed the features of the Kelloggââ¬â¢s assignment and how different parts of the advert such as colour and font size and use of images to coax the readers to buy the product. I have structured this project in a way that shows the features of the Kelloggââ¬â¢s advert, then my own advert and finally the identification of the differences and similarities between the two. Kelloggââ¬â¢s Advertà Here I will construct a detailed analysis of the advert and the uses of its features and effects on the viewer or reader.à At first glance we can see that the advert is situated in a magazine and is spread across two A4 sheets. We have two images on the left and another on the right, followed by a paragraph of text to the right of the advert. The first image is of a women of quite a young age say around 28-32 sitting in her morning clothes on a stool holding a bowl. This is the largest of the images on the page so it is the first thing that the eye will see as the reader turns the page and sees this advert. This may well point out the age group of the audience that the advert is aimed at, woman of age between 25 and 35 who tend nowadays to take their self-appearance very seriously and the advert will use this against them to sell the cereal. The image is in colour and the woman is good looking and has perfect bodily features for example her teeth are straight and brilliant white and she is slim and is dressed as an average person would look in the morning. The editor of this advert has set the image like this for quite a few reasons The image is in colour which adds a bright and happy feeling to the advertà The woman is good looking and slim this would make the reader envy the woman but also feel happy for her, and will push the reader to find the source of the womanââ¬â¢s perfect features.à She is the largest image of the advert this may show that the advert is mainly aimed at woman.à And finally the woman is wearing very casual clothes and looks like she has just woken up and is eating breakfast, which presumably is the cereal the advert intends to sell. This makes the reader feel accessible to the product in other words because the lady looks like an average person, the reader will not be put off and, maybe think that this product is only for ââ¬Å"the beautiful peopleâ⬠. Next on the advert is an image of a man, considerably smaller than that of the woman but this man has a tough look on his face is very well built, the man is shown with no top on emphasising his toned physique. At first glance the image doest ââ¬Å"sayâ⬠to much to the reader in terms of what that stands for, but once again related to the above point these fairly mysterious features entice the reader to read on just a little further just to find out what the images relate to. The last two images are of a spoon full of special K flakes, which is situated to the right of the advert midst all the text. This is very revealing as once you see this picture you begin to understand what the advert is describing, and the final image is of the front cover of a box of special K this small but significant image sticks in the readers mind very cleverly, as it is the last thing the person will read on the advert it will hopefully stick in their mind so that the next time they go shopping lets say they walk through the cereal isle and then as they go past the box it will instantly remind them of that advert they saw in that magazine, then once their minds start thinking and reminiscing on what they read, they will remember the pretty woman and the good looking man and this will all add up to finally convincing the reader to buy it and this is the long term result the owners of Special K are looking for. Following on from the subject of images we then smoothly come into the part about ââ¬Å"Text/Lexisâ⬠. Playing probably one of the most important roles of the entire advert, catchy one liners and titles and also thought provoking paragraphs assist the images in selling the product. We have four main sections of text on the entire page; we have one main heading a quote and two paragraphs of writing. First up is the title, which is situated bang in the middle of the page and reads ââ¬Å"Stay Specialâ⬠. Now there are quite a few analytical comments to make about this title, this particular title contains a considerable amount of potential which I am going to slowly explain. At first glance the reader will pick up on the size of the font and the colour, one word is black the other red, the text is big and bold and straight to the point just what is needed to get the message across quickly and efficiently, the word ââ¬Å"stayâ⬠is printed in black and has been placed, on top of another background image of a fridge, but do not be fooled, that image is not there for no reason the handle of the fridge â⬠coincidently runs underneath the word ââ¬Å"stayâ⬠doubling as an underlining effect, very clever! The word ââ¬Å"specialâ⬠in red, this is a colour coordinating effect that makes the reader believe that by eating this cereal you will stay special. What it is referring to is the image of the woman, special is merely referring to the womanââ¬â¢s physical appearance, she is fit in good shape and has good looks, all the components needed for the specified audience of this advert, women who are on the search for a man, (this is where the picture of the man will kick in) also very cleverly constructed is the positioning of the title, although to the casual reader it may seem like a bad printing job, but the word special has been purposely positioned to lie across both sides of the advert, this very effective technique acts as a bridge for the readers eyes leading them onto the next page of the advert to read for more, the readers are oblivious to this but find themselves already reading the next page, the word special has been carefully selected, as it coincides with the name of the product ââ¬Å"SPECIAL Kâ⬠, which has been colour coordinated to match the colour of the name of the box. So on reading that title the reader is lead straight onto the next piece of text, the quote.

Wet Seal Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Wet Seal - Case Study Example The product will be a success because, as Maxwell (2008) says, the market is turning from synthetic juices and turning to more organic foods and drinks due to health needs. According to Evanson (2012), market data indicates that an increasing number for people are willing to pay more for a drink as long as they can be sure that it is an organic drink. This, as Stevenson (2011) asserts, is very important in the marketing of natural organic drink because the production of such drinks is more expensive as opposed to the synthetic juices and this is an important factor because the prices for the product have to meet the production costs and the profit margin. The main challenge in marketing Fruto Natural Drink will be overcome market barriers caused by customer loyalty to the existing products. According to consumer insights, a great number of Americans are loyal to specific brands and find it hard to change from one brand to another (Wilson, 2009). However Fruto Natural Drink will be able to overcome this problem because it will be targeted to the younger people who are more willing to explore more possibilities. This will however not be a complete advant age in itself because once these customers have switched to Fruto Natural Drink; the challenge will be to make them loyal customers as the product grows. Fruto Natural Drink will benefit from the previous success of ClaraFoods and the wealth of management and marketing skills of ClaraFoods management. Fruto Natural Drink will also benefit from the strong brand of ClaraFoods and this will give it an opportunity to have a strong start in the market. The increasing concerns by the public on the kind of food they eat will also be another positive point in marketing Fruto Natural Drink because it is a natural and organic drink. Fruto Natural Drink will therefore take advantage of the fact that more and

Human Resource Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 10
Human Resource Management - Essay Example With modernization, organizations grew larger and the demand for human resource management kept increasing. With fordism in place human resource management emerged. Skills became fragmented and specialized as positions were highly differentiated. Organizations, therefore, updated service delivery to answer to the demands of the customers. Fordism highly supported division of labor mass production is widespread and most production companies still implement fordism principles in their administration of human resource management. Long hours and labor that is cheap are factors that are still profitable to the small manufacturing companies. However, the fordism principles cannot be as successful as before but they have highly helped in shaping the future of human resource management in most industries. There is so much improvement in technology, complexity of social environment and so many other changes. The human resource management being applied today has some traces of fordism but ford sim alone cannot be successful (Petit 220). The concept of institutional economics is a foundation of human resource management. The neoclassical and neo-institutional schools of economics argue that the economic theories are a foundation and great implications of the human resource management theory. The macro-prudential policies provide policy makers with a set of policy instruments to complement changes. The instruments implicate the policy makers to make fine judgment on risks to financial stability and traditional concerns on monetary policy. Caution when making judgments is highly encourages by the monetary policies. The macro-prudential policies are the main components of human resource management. People are highly affected by the changing customs and changing institutions and the institutional economics are pecuniary and emphasize on collective action of

Discrimination and Male-Female Earnings Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5500 words
Discrimination and Male-Female Earnings - Essay Example Even so, in terms of pay, women are seen to receive less than men. Research has shown that on similar levels of an organizational hierarchy, men make almost twenty-five percent more than that earned by women. Many experts are of the opinion that pay discrimination is a myth in present globalized economy. They are of the opinion that such pay differentials largely occur due to certain social factors such as, a difference of education, choice of job and difference in career objectives. Hence, it cannot be adequately termed as discrimination. Even after taking into account such factors, it has been observed that unfair discrimination of wages still exists. Women in the modern economic world constitute almost half the workforce in most industries. Women, although are not the primary, are considered as equal breadwinners in five out of ten families in most developing nations. In most societies, women obtain similar or even more education than men. Yet, it is seen that most institutions pr efer paying women lesser. The studies conducted over gender discrimination of wages suggest that if the wage gap continues to widen as its present level, then it would take another fifty years for women to earn at the same level (Gardeazabal and Ugidos 165). Women continue to be discriminated in respect of pay, hiring, and promotions. These factors have become so common in the workplace that women have begun accepting them as part of their work life. Ã The first few years after graduation are the most important period for both men and women in respect of starting and setting up their career paths. At this time, both the counterparts are young, unmarried and have very little or no job experience.
